Create a pointed punty with a smaller clear rod to use for a cold connection later.

Begin the marble with a large diameter rod of clear glass.  Heat end and remove any scum.

Build up a gather and begin creating an ice-cream cone shape at the end.  Lance shapes the cone at eye level to ensure optimal results.  Shaping from above the piece can be quite helpful.

Continue heating and shaping at eye level.

Apply dichro pieces around the cone with dichro facing inside.  Lance uses black-backed dichro.  He noted that additional colors could be applied between the dichro strips if desired for a different effect.

Decorate the outside of the black area with anything you'd like.

Punty up a smaller clear rod to the back.  Burn off the large clear rod and shape the marble lens.

Switch to cold-seal punty and complete final shaping gently before removing and placing marble in kiln to anneal.

One of Lance's beautiful Vortex marbles - not dichro, but a good indication of the depth and effects possible.

Another view.
