BEADS OF COURAGE  Southern Flames members made and contributed 54 Purple Hearts and 63 other beads to send to the children in the Beads of Courage program.  One of our members, Vivian Bansal, who could not be at the meeting took the time to send beads with this note:

Dear Beads By Design & Southern Flames,

In response to the "special Bead Challenge, I am submitting my contribution to Beads of Courage. I hope that my beads will be among the collection of beads that will be sent to this wonderful organization for children.

I am currently out of the country, however, my home base is Kennesaw, GA. I do keep up with the Southern Flame events via the internet.
This is how I found out about this special challenge.

I have a degree in Recreation Therapy (Kinesiology). I can confirm the benefits of such a program as Beads of Courage. it was very exciting for me to learn that Southern Flames is a part of such a truly rewarding and inspiring organization.

Thank you again so much! I look forward to meeting all of you when I am settled back in the Atlanta area.

Another member who couldn't be with us, Judy McCourt, left  beads in the Resource Cabinet to contribute. We are thinking that this is an idea that should continue.  So if you want to contribute more purple hearts or other beads leave them in the Cabinet and SF will send them off to Beads of Courage periodically.

BEAD RELEASE  Marcy Lamberson had another Artist Profile in the winter issue of The Bead Release. She profiles Lucie Kovarova-Weir who is a young Canadian beadmaker who  makes extraordinary murrine.  Its is a wonderful article with wonderful photos.

Also, in the issue Jim Kervin features Cat beads, and there is a wonderful photo of Nita Van Til's cat beads.  Kervin describes them delightfully "They are all sitting at attention in the real pose that cats use when surveying their domain.  They give just a hint of playfulness with their tails swishing back and forth".

GATHERING REGISTRATION  The Gathering Registration Booklets have been mailed so if you are an ISGB member you should have yours or be getting it shortly.
JANUARY 2006
CREATIVE SPIRIT GALLERY  Creative Spirit Gallery, owned by former SF co-president, Becky Sizemore, has just moved to downtown Decatur - right on Ponce de Leon.  You can get a map as well as the phone number and gallery hours at their website.  Becky has wonderful work in the Gallery, and it is very easy to find now that it has moved.
SYLVIEBEADS  NEW BEADING KIT  In addition to being a lampwork artist, Sylvie Lansdowne is also well known for her beaded work.  She teaches beading workshops and also creates and sells beading project kits.  This years kit has just come out and it features a lampwork mermaid with a beaded tail in a variety of colors and patterns.  As usual the project is beautiful, whimsical, and wearable.  We have a photo in the scrapbook but the best place to see Sylvie's current and previous projects is at her website/ebay store.  Hurry because last years project, the Halo bracelet and necklace is on sale through the end of January.
BEAD AND BUTTON - ALICE ST GERMAIN Congratulations to SF member Alice Germain who has a feature article in the February issue (p. 73) of Bead and Button.  Titled "Market Share" it features her own lampwork beads shaped like pattypan squash and gives step by step instructions for creating as a wire frame necklace for displaying the beads disk shaped beads.  Alice writes in the article "Like many lampworkers, I'm always on the lookout for interesting shapes and color combinations to turn into beads. During a recent trip to a farmers market, I was unexpectedly inspired by a bushel of colorful squash known as pattypans."  If you want to see more of Alice's work, go to her website and add your name to her mailing list.  And perhaps SF should have a vegetable bead challenge soon!
BEAD EXCHANGE PHOTOS from the January Meeting have been posted.  Take a look and if you can remember who made a bead that we have not identified please send us a note.  Even more important - some of the photos  of the beads were over exposed or unfocused - if you happen to have taken better photos of a bead or photographed your own bead before bringing it - please send it on.
AJC ARTICLE ON RODNEY ANDREW  One of our members, Rodney Andrew was featured in an article in the Gwinett Section of the Atlanta Journal Constitution on Jan 22.  If you don't have the paper or get the Gwinett section in your edition of the AJC, you may still be able to find the story online at  http://www.ajc.com/search/content/metro/gwinnett/stories/0123gwxglass.html.
