Kristen Frantzen Orr Lottery Form

  Presents  Kristen Frantzen Orr

Southern Flames is sponsoring 2 classes with Kristen Frantzen Orr.  There will be two 2-day sessions offered:  November 10 & 11 (Thursday / Friday) and November 12 & 13 (Saturday / Sunday), 2005.  Both class sessions will cover the same material.

Kristen will be teaching:  A Painterly Approach to Beadmaking.  Students will explore a variety of techniques for embellishing the surface of their lampworked glass beads. These will include overwraps; dots, stripes and trails; striped and cased stringers;  Frits and foils, and encasements. These techniques form the vocabulary that Kristen uses to create the floral beads for which she is best known. She encourages her students to take off in new directions by combining and expanding upon these basic techniques to develop a personal style. This is an intermediate class. Previous experience with "soft" glass and simple beadmaking is recommended.

Kristen's handmade glass beads blend her love of nature with her background as a watercolor artist. Kristen's work is in collections throughout the U.S., and in England, Japan, South Africa and Australia. Her work has been published in the books Making Glass Beads, by Cindy Jenkins; Bead Art, by Alice Korach; and The Society of Glass Beadmakers Exhibition Catalog from the Contemporary Glass Bead and Jewelry Show at the Rockwell Museum, Corning, NY; and in the magazines Lapidary Journal, Ornament, Beadwork and GLASS.

Kristen says, "I think that with glass, I have finally found the perfect medium! I had a feeling of 'coming home' when I discovered I could use watercolor techniques of layering transparent colors to create depth and draw the viewer into my pieces. Making beads from molten glass gives me an opportunity to capture light and reflect it. When I am working at the torch, I become centered and my mind switches over to a quiet place where I can express feelings that are too deep for words. Beads are personal and intimate, both for me as an artist, and for the person who wears them."

Kristen's class will cost $280 for Southern Flames members in good standing ($305 for non-members if the class is not filled by members).  Class placement will be determined via lottery at the September 21 Southern Flames meeting (see below for details).  In order to be in good standing a member must be current on dues and fees.  Students will provid their own tools and soft glass to be used in class (materials list to be provided prior to class).  Southern Flames will provide some additional materials that are included in the class fee.
